Now is the time of year to plan field maintenance. Sort out fencing, gates and gateways. Check your fencing is still sound after all the wind and rain we’ve had and replace or upgrade if necessary. Check that any electric fencing is still working well and that fixed attachments are not broken.
Field shelters can be checked over (and cleaned out if you deep litter) and wood retreated, roof checked over, ground checked for poaching.
Gateposts need checking – I know one of ours has shifted and will need fixing so the gate hangs better. A wonky gatepost can be a nightmare going into spring with fresh horses as gates don’t always close easily.
Gateways can be rolled and prepped for the coming winter – hardcore, grass mats, rough concrete, etc – so that they don’t poach and turn into a muddy mess next winter!
Fields need to be rolled soon, harrowed, and possibly reseeded!
If you can get on top of all the maintenance early, the rest of the year’s field care will be much easier.
