Do you notice your hands are at different heights, or that your hands rotate so the thumb is no longer on top? Ride with a short whip under your thumbs. This keeps your hands the same distance apart, keeps them level and keeps your thumbs on top. It will feel strange for a while, but it will make you more aware of your hand position and help to improve it.
